Indian River County Area Information

Whether you are looking to visit or move to Indian River County, or are already a resident hoping to delve into the options that this area offers, we will provide you with the history, events, arts, culture and area info that make Indian River County unique and beautiful.

Indian River County is comprised of five districts; the City of Fellsmere, the Town of Indian River Shores, the Town of Orchid, the City of Sebastian and the City of Vero Beach. The estimated population for the county is around 129,000 people and is comprised of 617 square miles.

Indian River County has been known famously for their citrus industry. The quality and taste of the fruit has been sought after for generations. Growers from other areas have attempted unsuccessfully to mimic the prestige that Indian River has received for their superior citrus.

Sports lovers have an endless array of options for their active lifestyles. Indian River County offers beautiful beaches and waves to surf, swim, play beach volleyball, fish or enjoy a day of boating. If beach activities aren’t your favorite, choose from one of our many golf courses for a relaxing day out on the green. Be sure to keep you eyes open for a glimpse of Florida’s native birds and fauna. Vero Beach was also the home Spring Training base for the Dodgers from 1949 to 2008. Holman Stadium brought much entertainment and joy to baseball enthusiasts.

Indian River County has a small town feel, with the shopping and dining options available of a larger city. We offer many popular chain restaurants as well as some local and historical favorites. From places like the Ocean Grille that was established in 1938 and filled with magnificent artifacts and delectable food, to new favorites such as the Fujiyama Steakhouse, there is no need to travel elsewhere to get varied options of fine cuisine and spectacular atmosphere.

The arts have been an integral part of Indian River County’s history from the beginning. The Vero Beach Art Club began in 1936 and there are now numerous galleries, museums and theaters for us to appreciate and support our local artists.

Indian River State College has their main campus in Fort Pierce with other campuses in Stuart, Port St. Lucie, Okeechobee and Vero Beach. Once a community college, Indian River State College now offers Bachelor degrees for those pursuing higher education. The county is also home to some highly rated elementary through high schools and affords both public and private school options depending on your preference.

Religion is an important part of many people’s lives and there is no shortage of worship facilities in Indian River County. No matter your denomination, there is a place for you. Covering Catholic, Baptist, Methodist, Jewish and numerous other religious beliefs, this county is very diverse and accommodating to your religious needs.

Protecting the beautiful ecology that comprises our area has always been a high priority. From the 1903 start of the Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge in the Indian River Lagoon to the McKee Botanical Garden with it’s beginning in 1929, modern day resources continue to follow these historical leads. The implementation of the Environmental Learning Center and Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge focus on educating and protecting all that is environmentally sacred within the county.

There is no question that Indian River County has always, and continues to, draw people to the area with it’s beauty and eclectic variety of recreation. Some choose to own a vacation home here where they can get away from the stress and responsibilities of day to day life while others make the decision to call this beautiful community “home”. The local real estate market has reflected this popularity and even in a down market, we continue to draw people in.
