The Food Culture of Indian river county

Along the Indian River are both historical and trendy places to dine and are sure to please even the most persnickety eater.

The Sexton family has played an integral roll in the history and development of Indian River County. Waldo Sexton, known as an eccentric yet amazing man, was responsible for building many establishments within Vero Beach and was also known as one the area’s biggest developers.

The Ocean Grill was built by Waldo Sexton in 1938 and began as a hamburger shack. Over the years, it has shown it’s amazing ability to fair well through various hurricanes and storms, weathering far better than surrounding establishments. Much like most of Sexton’s developments, the walls are covered with his “treasures”. From wrought iron pieces to paintings to any imaginable artifact you can envision, this is not only a place to enjoy five-star food, but it is also packed with plenty of visual interest. Their menu now consists of amazing fresh fish, filet mignon and delicious salads to name a few of the local favorites.

Waldo’s Restaurant at the Driftwood Inn, another one of Waldo Sexton’s enterprises, was completed in 1947 while the Inn itself, originally constructed as a family home, was completed 10 years prior. Its rustic ambiance and tasty food makes this place a win-win situation.

The Patio is another restaurant rich in Indian River history. Originating in 1945 as an ice cream parlor, it is full of artifacts brought by Addison Mizner from Spain and France. The Patio offers a wide array of choices for lunch or dinner along with a great atmosphere.

In order to please diners looking for more trendy spots with diverse cuisine, Indian River County has many options.

Sushi has become a very popular choice and there is no shortage of options for the sushi connoisseur. Take your pick from Sake Sushi Bar and Grille, Siam Orchid Thai Sushi, Little Tokyo Gourmet Sushi & Grill, Fujiyama Japenese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar among many other choices.

For some Cuban fare, Costa d’ Este is all the rave. It is owned by Grammy award winner Gloria Estefan and has dramatically increased in popularity. They provide not only tasty Cuban inspired food, but also offer a four-star resort with amenities ensured to help you relax.
