Ocean Grill
Waldo Sexton, the eccentric entrepreneur who left his imprint on so many landmarks in Vero Beach, built the Ocean Grill about 70 years ago. Constructed 200 yards from the rolling Atlantic Ocean high on a sand dune in 1941, the Grill is a wonderful storehouse for Waldo’s treasures, which include pecky cypress, mahogany, wrought iron and Spanish antiques. The history of the building includes a brief stint as an officer’s club during the Second World War and a “hangout” for Chicago gangsters. Numerous owner/managers tried their style of hospitality until the Replogle family moved from Milwaukee, Wisconsin to lease and operate the Ocean Grill in 1965. Currently, their third generation is learning the ropes of management, using family memoirs as his training manual.
You’ll delight in the American cuisine, with strong attention to seafood and steaks. That said, the Roast Duckling is the best you’ll find in Florida. Local delicacies like Blue Crab and Fresh Fish are the favorite fare of locals and visitors alike. Each day, Prime Ribs of beef are slow-roasted to perfection. Seasonal favorites like Stone Crab, Soft Shell Crab, and fresh Florida Lobster will also make a showing on the menu. In addition to the side dishes that are included in menu prices, there is also a list of other selections to round out your meal including fresh fruit at lunch, steamed fresh asparagus or broccoli with hollandaise sauce at dinner, delicious clam chowder, and specialty salads anytime. An award-winning children’s menu is sure to interest your little ones. Desserts, salad dressings, and sauces are made on site by a seasoned crew overseen by our Chef Timm McGraw, trained at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and the food is high quality and consistent. Lunch ($6 - $19) is served Monday through Friday, and dinner ($14 - $36) is served every night. The restaurant closes for two weeks beginning on Labor Day for employee vacation.
