Green tips
- The average "Food Mile" for grocery store items grown in the United States is 1500 miles travel before it gets sold. Buying local at farmers' markets for fresher, local food reduces harmful emissions that contribute to Global Warming.
- Use a programmable thermostat, or turn up the temperature setting on your standard thermostat while your away from home. You will be surprised what a difference a few hours not running your air conditioning can make in your utility bill.
- Use compact fluorescent bulbs to light your house, they use much less energy and typically last 3-5 years.
- Check the insulation for your ceiling and walls.
- Replace old water heaters with solar heating, we do live in the sunshine state. You get a tax credit and its completely clean energy.
- Have you air duct's checked for leaks and other inefficiencies.
- Replace old windows with energy-efficient windows
- Make sure windows and doors seal properly
- Turn off lights, fans and other electronics your not using. Make sure you also unplug chargers that will pull a current as long as they're in the wall.
- Don't use as many plastic water bottles. While they are very convenient, studies have shown there is no proven difference in the safety between bottled water and tap water. Save some money and put less in our landfills.
- Take canvas bags when you shop. We can save trees and space in our landfills if we stop using disposable bags when we shop.
- Use less water. You can save over a gallon of water each time you brush your teeth if you just turn off the water while you brush.
- Set your thermostat lower in the winter and higher in the summer by a few degrees.
- If your away from home for more then a few days, turn off your water heater at the breaker. Most water heaters will reheat within an hour of being turned back on.
