THE GREENER SIDE of Indian River County

On april 14th, 2009, Indian River County was awarded gold level certification as a Florida Green Local Government by the Florida Green Building Coalition, Inc. (FGBC). We are the fourth county in Florida to be awarded Green certification with our environmentally friendly programs, database of building energy compliance and a green fleet. The county is also considering a Green building awards program.

Indian River County has a variety of nature preserves and ecological centers which promote conservation of our natural ecosystem. Spend some time at FPL's energy encounter where you can interact with more than 30 displays to learn about energy conservation or take a walk along their one mile Turtle Beach nature trail.

If you are looking for ways you can help, you could try volunteering with our local Habitat for Humanity who has built over 30 homes using green appliances and sustainable building materials. You could also contact the Indian River Green Team or Keep Indian River Beautiful(KIRB) who both organize green events and have green programs for you to utilize. We also have a list of Green tips you can use to improve your carbon footprint.

Indian River County Solid Waste Disposal District (S.W.D.D.), offers recycling bins and pickup of recycling materials to all residents for free. To find out more about our recycling program click here.
