the Visual Arts

Indian River County has been a community rich in the arts for years. Pleasing enthusiasts with its array of musical theater and art galleries, there has never been a shortage of artistic venues to enjoy. The present day is no exception.

Riverside Theater, originating in 1973 in Vero Beach, continues to grow and improve not only upon their beautiful facilities but also on perfecting their theatrical lineup. Their performances range from Broadway hits such as Big River, film favorites like It’s a Wonderful Life, to Ella, a story of Grammy award winner jazz vocalist, Ella Fitzgerald. There is sure to be a show for everyone to enjoy!

A successful component of their venue is Riverside Children’s Theater, which provides workshops, theater programs and scholarships to the youth within our community. In addition to their on-stage children’s theater performances, they also produce RCTV, a TV show that is run exclusively by and for children.

The Vero Beach Theater Guild offers great theatrical performances in addition to local audition opportunities for the aspiring or skilled thespian. They welcome newcomers and strive to maintain a balance of both first-time and experienced actors. You can choose to gather up the courage to star in one of their productions or sit back and enjoy the hard work and dedication of your fellow Indian River County residents.

If viewing both historic and modern-day art is more of your passion, Indian River County boasts numerous galleries as well as the Vero Beach Museum of Art. Whether your intention is to observe or purchase some artistic delights, Gallery 14, Tiger Lily Art Studio, Tulaa Gallery and The Laughing Dog Gallery are just a few of the local spots to obtain such masterpieces. The plethora of art genres includes photography, ceramics, sculptures, pottery, oil and watercolor paintings. The Vero Beach Museum of Art also holds exhibitions and educational programs as well as the displayed art in their five art galleries.

The Vero Beach Art Club presents their “Under the Oaks” art show every year at Riverside Park in Vero Beach. Their upcoming event will commemorate the 59th annual show featuring selected artists from around the country. There is no cost to attend and plenty of food is available to keep your energy up while admiring the amazing artwork.

The Cultural Council of Indian River County serves as a liaison between artists and art lovers. They promote events, artists and overall networking in our community. The Cultural Council also holds art exhibits and call-to-artist competitions. You can submit and view upcoming events in the “Cultural Connection” which appears in a section of the Press Journal every Monday. Membership dues are reasonable and assist our flourishing and diverse artistic population. It has been the ongoing support of our community that has enabled Indian River County to remain lush in culture and the arts.
